Live video chat — Wednesday, January 20th 8 pm (CST)
by DesignChat

Join us and the growing DesignChat community for a live video conversation with design legend Milton Glaser. Host, Ryan McGovern leads an informal face-to-face with this imaginative modern renaissance man — a rare breed of designer-illustrator that has influenced and delighted the world of art and graphic design.
Glaser’s ever-expanding portfolio of work includes the original “I Love NY” campaign logo (1976) — described as “the most frequently imitated logo design in human history.” With the founding of New York Magazine (1968), co-founding of Pushpin Studios (1954) and his own studio, Milton Glaser, Inc.(1974), he’s been able to pursue his passions and successfully navigate a career that’s pointed many clients, friends and fellow designers down a path of true creativity.
We look forward to talking with Glaser this Wednesday evening and hope to draw a large crowd for this FREE live Online event. We hope to see you there too.
Bonus:
Start thinking about your questions now! DesignChat will be gathering audience questions throughout the broadcast. The 3 best questions (judged by the DesignChat support-staff) will make it into the live
video conversation.

AUTHOR INFO: Design Chat
DesignChat is an informal design discussion held weekly between creative professionals, artists, hobbiests and interested individuals. Started as a simple hashtag “#” conversation on Twitter it has grown to include a live broadcast, text chat and soon maybe a live event or two.
Through conversation, DesignChat hopes to break down competitive barriers, unite the world of design and help us all identify with others in our profession. Guests range from the up-and-coming, to the established-and-honored.
None of the “official” staff have an “official” broadcasting background so it’s become a fun, easy, and unintimidating way to talk to the people we’ve always wanted to know more about. Join-in on the conversation!

HOST INFO: Ryan McGovern
DesignChat founder and host, Ryan McGovern continues to build relationships and connections that bridge the gap between the in-the-trenches design work that we all know, and the aspirations we all need to have. As a talented Art Director himself, he balances a demanding full-time position with the responsibilities of leading the DesignChat community.
McGovern’s pioneering efforts to communicate the value of design through social media (especially DesignChat) helps us all understand that we’re part of something bigger — a design and communication collective that continues to accelerate our industry.
McGovern’s easy conversation and style help to bring the sometimes lofty world of design into perspective. His position as weekly chat host and curator highlights his passion and curiosity for everything design. McGovern is a personality and presence that lets us all into the group and welcomes the discussions that follow.

So! Who all made it in the video chat?! It was definitely too short and if you were not there, you missed out. The man is just so wise and brilliant, really makes you take a step back…
Here are a few quotes from tonight:
“You have to be willing to give up what you already believe in”
“You should be immediately suspicious of anything that seems overly clever.”
“It’s depressing to see (design) work by someone who is stupid’”
“‘Do No Harm’ is a principle I urge my students to take.”
“the ability to make connections” (in things that might not be related) is greatest skill of a designer”
Asked what he wants to be remembered for in 100 years: “Doing good work.”
“Good luck guys, keep it going”
To give you an idea of how truly old school Milton is, his screensaver went on in the middle of the video chat, he said “I think I lost the picture, I cannot see you anymore.” Ryan the video host had to instruct him to jiggle the mouse or hit the space bar. Classic.
The web is filled with lots of information, here’s another nice video:

Thanks to Design Chat and Milton.

I thought the video chat was way to short also. Maybe because the first chunk of it was all questions about technology and Milton couldn’t answer them or just didn’t care. He is however an awesome guy. I loved when he said “ the ability to make connections in things that might not be related is the greatest skill of a designer.” I think that is so true. His answers were much like his work, simple and sophisticated. I’m glad nwicreative posted this event. I really enjoyed it!
